A wedding could be the most important day of your life but it could also be the most expensive. Somewhere along the way, people started to believe that the more they spent on their wedding day the more special it was. In reality, the most magical part about a wedding is that you are marrying your soulmate. Everything after that is window dressing. This is what gave one couple the amazing idea to have an incredible wedding moment without the stress, complications, and budget.
Zoe Lavery and Andy Lynch decided they wanted to get married but hated the idea of spending countless nights planning a wedding and trying to make all of their family’s needs work out. They didn’t have a huge budget and didn’t place much importance on an expensive wedding anyway.
Zoe suggested that the pair should elope. They should run away somewhere and get married on a cheap budget without the distraction of others. However, Zoe knew that her mother would be incredibly angry if they followed that plan through. She was stumped. How could she have a simple wedding yet keep her mother happy? Andy came up with the perfect plan.
The clever couple decided they would host a large engagement party, with a disco and buffet. They would invite everyone to come along but keep things pretty simple. In reality, it would not be their engagement party at all but their wedding. They let their mothers in on the secret and no one else, not even their children. While the party was going to plan Andy took the stage and introduced a special guest, a marriage celebrant. At the same time, Zoe disappeared and got into a wedding dress. The work was done. The ceremony was held with their nearest and dearest friends in attendance and everyone was happy.
The total wedding package including the honeymoon, the ceremony, the rings, and 200 guests cost them just under 4,000 pounds. These incredible savings were achieved while still ticking off all the required boxes for a traditional wedding and the little things each of them wanted to happen.
It was a refreshing solution to what is a glaringly obvious problem today. Couples put more and more pressure on themselves to have huge parties for their wedding. The latest trend is a destination wedding where you ask all your guests to also pay for flights and accommodation at a foreign destination. If it is not bad enough to create a huge expense we are now creating a huge expense for others. The wedding business is massive and some people can go into debt simply to afford it.
If you have the money and want an extravagant wedding, go for it. If you don’t have the money don’t go into debt for one day when the rest of your life is yet to be lived. You just found the person you want to spend the rest of your life with, don’t start that life off in a negative financial position.
