“Here comes the bride, all dressed in white…” that is how the song goes, at least. Does the bride really have to wear white? Does that tradition still make any sense? Read on for some ideas on what else you could wear:
Why white?
The first question is, where did the tradition of white come from in the first place? There were several reasons that white became the norm. The main reason often highlighted is that white represents everything a bride is supposed to be, things like purity and virtue. In reality, though, in the past, brides wore any colored dress. Often they wore their best outfit and so it could be any color.
It was only when Queen Victoria married Prince Albert in 1840, to show off her fantastic lace, the real trend was born. Following this, wealthy families tried to emulate by wearing white as well. White dresses soon become an icon for the wealthy. To show how much extra cash they had. So if this is something you are not a believer in, you have options:
Go Floral
If you are getting married outside, it may be an excellent idea to choose a floral pattern instead. Something that makes you a part of nature that you are using as your surrounds.
Be Cinderella
Cinderella wore a long blue dress, and for many young girls, this was the real fantasy growing up. Why not emulate this Disney princess and wear blue.
Go Gothic
If white doesn’t represent you in life, why should it on your wedding day. If you are getting married in a gothic cathedral, all the better. Choose a dress that respects who you are in everyday life.
Whatever You Want
At the end of the day, it doesn´t matter what you wear. It matters how you feel. Choose something that makes you feel special and ignore the doubters. This day is for you, not them.
