The wedding day is stressful enough without thinking about giving a speech to a large crowd of your nearest and dearest. Do the bride and groom have to give a speech? The short answer is no, the long answer is yes, but the difference is more than one letter. Read on to find out more.

If you have a fear of public speaking, if it is your worst nightmare, if it scares you so much you are not looking forward to your wedding day, then, of course, you do not have to give a speech. But if you are up to the challenge it can be a really nice way to thank those who have come for your special day and to highlight the love of your life.

Traditionally the MC will speak as well as the best man and maid of honor. A member of each family then usually speaks, often the mother or father of the bride and groom. After this is when either the bride, groom, or both will speak.

If you are interested in giving a speech but are crippled with nerves, there are some solutions. You could give the speech with your new spouse. Taking on this first challenge together is a great way to start married life and you will act as fantastic supports to calm each other’s nerves. It is probably best not to imagine everyone naked as your granny or old auntie is likely in the crowd.

Another good tip is to write down your speech and learn it off by heart. Then write it into smaller notes. That way you don’t have to read your speech off a piece of paper but you will have the headings to keep you on track. This will ensure it sounds like it is coming from the heart.

While many feel wedding speeches are supposed to be funny, this is usually for the best man, maid of honor and the family. Your speech at your wedding should come from the heart. Start by thanking those who made the day possible. Thank your parents. Finally, thank the person you are marrying for coming into your life. The speech does not have to be very long but if it comes from the heart it will be a winner.
